An Nisa

This poem is laid out with exact line breaks — it reads best on a larger screen or laptop. On a phone, long lines wrap to fit.

There's something about a woman in this faith
a resilience, a strength
tolerance
strike me, lord
and don't do it lightly
rip my clothes and beat me raw
after all it is all I am good for
still I will praise your name
fall on my knees five times a day and lay prostate on the earth
carry your words in my heart
breathe in shards of glass
prick my skin with needles every second of the day
make me imperfect, then don't love me for it
make me inferior
God is god to man
man is god to woman
there's something about this kind of faith
something about a love with pain
something about suffering .
it feels religious if done right
